In 1994 four Friday the 13th novels were published by Berkley Books. These books, known as The Camp Crystal Lake novels were published as young adult fiction, so the slasher film fans didn’t know about them until after Berkley Books cancelled the series due to lack of sales. It didn’t help that Berkley didn’t make any kind of attempt to promote this series. Still, during “the dark years” as F13 fan called the years between 1994 through 1998, when Jason X was released, fans embraced The Camp Crystal Lake Novels as their only source of original F13 stories. The books opened doors for original novels based on slasher films. The author of The Camp Crystal Lake Novels, William Pattison, aka Eric Morse, fought and actually convinced New Line Cinema to contract with Black Flame Books to publish a new series of Friday the 13th and Jason X novels, along with novels of other slasher franchises under the New Line banner.
When author Peter Bracke was working on The Complete History or Friday the 13th, aka Crystal Lake Memories, he did a three hour interview with author William Pattison, aka Eric Morse. This interview was edited out of book in its first printing. During the second printing Bracke added a paragraph and a picture of one of the books as a courtesy to Pattison.
Since then The Camp Crystal Lake Novels have been ignored by most horror media, including Fangoria, Rue Morgue, and Horror Hound magazines. Author William Pattison, aka Eric Morse, has been forced to pretty much beg for interviews. Also, with the release of the Crystal Lake Memories Documentary, The Camp Crystal Lake Novels have been ignored once again.
These novels are significant to the Friday the 13th Franchise and horror in general. The fact that these books and their author are denied any recognition is a crime. It is a slap to the face of every fan that struggled during “the dark times” and quested for the holy grail of F13, The Camp Crystal Lake Novels. These books deserve recognition and it is up to the fans to demand it. Tell the magazines and websites you say they need to recognize these books. It is up to you….
How do we do it?
We write these people and ask them nicely…..

To Whom it May Concern,
I’m a fan of Eric Morse’s Camp Crystal Lake Novels. These books were very important to me and my friends during the years between the film Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X. These years the fans of Friday the 13th consider the dark years it was a time when Eric Morse and his books were very important to the fans. His books changed the genre and opened doors so that original novels based on slasher franchises could be published. The books are significant to Friday the 13th and horror in general. We, the fans, ask that you show these works the recognition they deserve.
